I laid out the main body panel right side up and the side gore right side down. The bias edge of the gore is aligned with the straight side of the body panel.

Here is an example of what NOT to do. I sewed the seam on the wrong side, so the seam edge is hanging out on the front of the dress (that's what I get to paying more attention to the camera than the pinning). I quickly turned this into a french seam.

This is the layout for pinning the side seams. As you can see, the gown is quite voluminous at this point (remember there should be four gores on each side, I only used two. The gown should be even wider than this.) I lined up the side edges from hem to armscye and stitched.
